In Trois Bateaux Sur le Trieux, where the Trieux empties toward Paimpol, Paul Sérusier sketched this Synthetist notation on toned paper stained the color of driftwood. His Pont-Aven training pulses through every flattened form: the sailboat's cadmium-orange triangle, the umber hillside scored with vertical crayon strokes, the charcoal tree masses silhouetted like standing stones.
A single cottage with its mauve roof anchors human presence amid wild estuary rhythms. The Trieux moves silently beneath that vermilion sail, carrying the cargo of late nineteenth-century color revolution toward distant coasts.
With Trois Bateaux Sur le Trieux, Sérusier refused perspective's seduction, instead layering horizontal bands—cream water, sienna shore, lavender-gray horizon—that echo his Talisman's lessons learned under Gauguin's direction in 1888. The Nabis circle would soon absorb this approach into Parisian decorative programs, but here the work remains rooted in Breton soil.
