Dusk drops through the trees and Hish, Lord of Silence, comes out to work. Sidney Sime drew him for Lord Dunsany's The Gods of Pegāna, the 1905 book that built a pantheon out of thin air. He is one of the thousand home gods. His job is small and total.

Look how he moves. A bone-pale shroud winds him up to the eyes, and a tight band crosses his mouth. One arm folds against his chest. His body narrows into a single stem ruled with pen lines, so he slides past the grass tufts like candle smoke with a spine.

Trunks rise like pit props into a roof of soot-brown leaves, each a tiny scale set down by hand. Sime picked up the trick from Japonisme and Aubrey Beardsley's flat inks. Pattern crowds the top. Emptiness owns the middle.

Origin Story

Sidney Herbert Sime (1865–1941) was the English artist who drew fantasy with a satirist's teeth. Born poor in Hulme, Manchester, he spent five years as a scoop pusher in the Yorkshire coal mines, almost losing his life. A linen shop, a barber's, signwriting. Finally the Liverpool School of Art, and awards. His fantastic illustrations for Pick-Me-Up, The Idler and the Pall Mall Gazette masked biting satire, aimed at politicians and the rich.

Approached in 1904 by Lord Dunsany, he illustrated The Gods of Pegāna, A Dreamer's Tales and The Book of Wonder, where his pictures inspired some of the stories. Almost exclusively monochrome at first, he turned late to colour, designed scenery and costumes, and drew frontispieces for William Hope Hodgson and Arthur Machen. His widow Mary preserved what remained; it became the Sime Gallery in Worplesdon, Surrey.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
