The Cardinal of Shadows takes the cathedra at dusk. Scarlet brocade pours off both shoulders in the sweep of a cappa magna, and two ember-orange eyes fix the viewer with the stare Velázquez gave his pope in 1650. Nothing blinks.
Florence painted this animal as the enemy. In the Spanish Chapel, around 1365, Andrea di Bonaiuto set the Dominicans loose as piebald hounds. Domini canes, the Lord's dogs, tear there at wolves who stand in for heretics. Here the heretic wears the vestments. A black wolf sits robed in this neo-baroque art print where the hounds once hunted, lace rochet frothing ivory at the collar under rosary ropes of garnet and jet.
One sable hand closes on a pastoral staff of honeyed wood. This anthropomorphic black wolf fronts the art print in full vermilion damask, dressed in the Baroque manner of Philippe de Champaigne's Richelieu. A gilt finial climbs between the ears, a steeple worn as a mitre.
Beyond their throne the countryside goes bistre, the tint of old incense smoke, and a far spire shrinks to a pin. Scripture warned of wolves in sheep's clothing. This one chose the shepherd's, and the flock is already kneeling.
