Fabric’s echo clings to the ochre walls where the man stands—barefoot, draped in clay-orange silk and sun-bleached linen, as if swathed in the hush between earth and flame. His gaze half-tilted skyward. He is both monument and witness: trader, sentinel, vessel. This is not portraiture. It is performance

The backdrop blooms with vegetal flourish: broad banana leaves arching like the ribs of an emerald cathedral, framing ceramics patterned with cobalt whispers. At his feet, the predator sleeps eternal—its pelt splayed in surrender, glassy eyes fixed on some vanished horizon.

Woven goods, saturated in crimsons and jade, cascade beside him. A tapestry of trade and gaze. A stillness tense with untold weight. The hanging urn, the Moorish arch, the worn brick murmuring decay—each a ledger in a visual economy of empire, possession, pride. His presence steadies the scene: a figure at once merchant and monument, clothed not just in cloth, but in the centuries he carries.

Origin Story

Carlo Ascenzi, a Roman painter of the 17th century, infused the grandeur of Baroque into richly textured narratives of color and form. Trained under Pietro da Cortona, Ascenzi was a distinguished member of Rome’s Academy of San Luca and the esteemed Virtuosi of the Pantheon.

His mastery graced prominent spaces, from the evocative ceiling frescoes of San Carlo al Corso to the tender depiction of St. Nicola in Genazzano. Each canvas pulses with theatrical drama and luminous detail, as in his captivating scenes of figures draped in vibrant textiles, an enduring testament to Baroque opulence and Ascenzi’s poetic command of visual storytelling.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
