Sargent worked alla prima here, wet pigment dragged through turpentine washes to capture the Rehearsal of the Pasdeloup Orchestra's provisional energy. The bass drum anchors the right margin, its cream membrane a moon against orchestral darkness. Above, crimson fabric suggests the hall's theatrical bones while slate undertones push figures forward into diffused light.
