About the Artist

Watanabe Seitei, born in 1851, was a Meiji-era artist who transformed traditional bird and flower painting (kachōga) into a cross-cultural phenomenon.

Trained in Nihonga, Seitei later traveled to Paris, where he absorbed Western artistic techniques. Upon his return, he blended Eastern washes with European realism, creating unique works that captivated audiences both in Japan and abroad.

Seitei's art wasn't limited to canvas; his designs also adorned ceramics and cloisonné, elevating everyday items to the level of fine art. His nature scenes, featuring birds and flowers, showcased his ability to capture ephemeral beauty with exquisite detail.

Seitei's influence extended beyond his own work, inspiring future generations of Nihonga artists and bridging the artistic worlds of East and West.
