Passing the Bamboo Grove - Suzuki Harunobu Art Print

Snow has claimed the bamboo grove before she arrives. Suzuki Harunobu, the Edo period master who launched the nishiki-e brocade print in 1765, sends her in anyway on tall black geta clogs. Passing the Bamboo Grove catches her mid-step, chin tucked, fingers pinching the cords of a wicker kasa hat tilted into a small brown roof.

Jade green stalks rise from a pewter gray path, each ruled in sumi ink. Blind embossing presses the snow into relief, so white clumps sit heavy on every leaf cluster. Her outer kimono glows pale apricot, banded with sage clouds. Beneath it runs vermilion kanoko shibori, thousands of tie-dyed dots Edo townswomen wore as coded wealth. A lattice obi hangs at her side.

Harunobu built bijin-ga from gestures this small. This Meiji-era reprint recuts his Japanese woodblock print line by line, keeping the ukiyo-e winter errand intact. Hang the art print where cold light enters as she keeps walking through the snow scene year round.
