Charles Demuth's Circus catches the big top in 1917, one beat before the drum roll. A broad-backed acrobat turns from you. Marigold singlet. Soot-black trunks. One fist locks onto an umber rail as his other arm hauls a rope into the tented sky. Above him a trapeze artist hangs upside down in saffron tights, knees hooked and palms spilling toward the net.
Demuth built this watercolor the way riggers build a show. Graphite first, fine as guy wire. Blotted washes of cadmium yellow and peach flesh pooled against sepia canvas and rust-red tent poles. Muscles bloom out of the watercolor blots.
Years before his Precisionist grain elevators, the American modernist left Lancaster's tobacco warehouses for vaudeville houses and tent shows, sketching the men who lifted and sweated for a crowd. His queer eye lingers on shoulder blades with frank appetite.
On the far pole a woman in a mustard leotard waits on a swaying ring. And this vintage circus art print keeps everyone mid-air, trusting a line thinner than a hair will catch them.
