Wartime New York in 1918 pressed its men into uniform and rules. Comstock laws hunted anything resembling this scene. So Demuth worked small, watercolor on paper over a pencil underdrawing, letting ochre warm a shoulder as damp pigment trickled down the walls like condensation.

Manhattan bathhouses like the Lafayette Baths gave men a steamed republic of their own, and Demuth sometimes came with Marcel Duchamp. But the Lancaster, Pennsylvania painter kept each male nude away from gallery walls. Alfred Stieglitz would later show his poster portraits in daylight.
