Charles Demuth turns suntan into a confession. In The Artist on the Beach at Provincetown, the young painter sits shirtless on the sand with his back to us, a coral red expanse of skin laced with pencil lines along the spine. He lifts a cigarette in one hand, his other grips a loose fistful of brushes.

Weathered wharf pilings crowd around him in charcoal gray, their pigment granulated into grainy soot. Beyond them the harbor goes lavender slate. Sailboats tilt. The small town floats on the horizon in graphite, a promise still in draft.

This 1934 watercolor belongs to Demuth's return to the Provincetown art colony, two decades after his summers among the Provincetown Players. The crisp edges of Precisionism loosen here into wet blooms. Indigo trunks puddle into bruised navy above a white belt. A brown palette rests by his bare heel, speckled with cobalt and vermilion.

This self portrait as male figure study joins Demuth's historical Provincetown beach scenes, a series frank about the pleasure of looking at men. An empty canvas waits before him, outlined in pencil. A blank day propped at his knee. American modernism resting in the sand with lowered brushes contemplating the sea.

Origin Story

Charles Demuth was an alchemist of pigment and line, conjuring bodily rapture from watercolors that glowed like the fevered skin of nude males at rest and play.

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1883, he flayed the mundane world into erotic abstraction, rendering industrial landscapes as sacraments of modernity and desire. Demuth’s portraits of queer longing — flower-lipped, cigarette-fingered — trembled on the edge of myth, each stroke a sinuous hymn to the unspoken.

Demuth died in 1935, leaving behind a canon of luminous disobedience: bridges and silos and lovers, all trembling under the weight of his fierce, unsparing gaze.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
