The bird grips a slender branch that arcs toward yellow blossoms, their stamens tipped in red as though holding the heat of summer. Negative space becomes an unspoken horizon, letting the colors hum without confinement.

About the Artist

Numata Kashu, active in the late 19th century, was a Japanese artist celebrated for his vivid woodblock prints, particularly his renowned "A Picture Book of Birds." Published during the Meiji era, this three-volume collection brought Japan's birdlife to life with dynamic compositions and intricate detail. Kashu’s birds, adorned with vibrant plumage, are depicted in scenes blending traditional East Asian styles with the renewed vigor of Meiji-era creativity.

Despite the rarity of original prints, Kashu's work remains a treasured piece of Japanese art history, capturing a period of cultural blossoming where nature and artistry intertwined in colorful harmony.
