About this Artwork

Marsden Hartley painted "Madawaska (The Greek Boxer)" during his final Maine period, fixing Lionel Daigle's stare on the viewer with unflinching directness. Daigle, a French-Canadian boxer from Madawaska, sat for Hartley in the early 1940s, and the artist rendered his features through the heavy dark outline that marks Hartley's late style.

Heavy brows and a set jaw frame eyes painted almost black, holding the frontal pose steady and refusing any softened angle. Hartley builds the face from planes of umber flesh tone and ochre undertone, each stroke thick with impasto edge against a deep red field behind him. 

The composition owes its scale and simplified anatomy to the folk-art primitivism Hartley absorbed from New England craft traditions and from the German Expressionist circles he knew in Berlin. 

Daigle's shoulders fill the canvas edge to edge, a working-class archetype elevated to monumental portraiture. Hartley's brush never looks away, and the picture insists we do the same, one unbroken gaze fixed inside the crimson ground.
Origin Story

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was the American Modernist who painted grief and granite with equal force. Born Edmund Hartley in Lewiston, Maine, he studied under William Merritt Chase and found a champion in Alfred Stieglitz, debuting at the 291 gallery in 1909. In Paris he absorbed Cézanne and Picasso; in Berlin, alongside Kandinsky and Franz Marc, he forged his War Motif abstractions—Portrait of a German Officer (1914) mourning his beloved Karl von Freyburg in flags, medals, and coded numbers.

A restless wanderer through New Mexico, Provence, Mexico, and Nova Scotia, Hartley returned home in 1937 to become "the painter of Maine." His Mount Katahdin canvases and rugged fishermen fused mysticism with modernism, turning loss into monumental American landscape.
