Drawn in his Pigotts workshop two years before his death, Gill's 1937 seated woman emerges as a single warm-blonde wire bent across a velvety black field.

The line begins at the crown, releases nine or ten ribbon-curls of hair, then descends — clavicle, the soft underside of one breast, the curve of waist into hip, knees drawn up like folded compass arms.

No flesh tones, no chiaroscuro from the Slade tradition; this is contour drawing as carving-by-pencil, the gesture of a man who spent his days cutting letterforms and stone reliefs at Ditchling and Capel-y-ffin.

The cream-on-black palette borrows the visual logic of a wood engraving's white line. She sits there, weighted yet weightless, an interwar British modernist nude reduced to its luminous outline.
Origin Story

Eric Gill (1882–1940) was a Brighton-born English sculptor, letter-cutter, wood engraver, and typeface designer whose craft fused Arts and Crafts ideals with Roman Catholic conviction. Trained in calligraphy and stone masonry in London, he became England's most sought-after carver, executing stonework for Westminster Cathedral, the BBC headquarters, and the League of Nations building in Geneva. His Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic at Ditchling channelled medieval workshop values into the twentieth century.

Between 1925 and 1931, Gill designed his defining typefaces — Perpetua, Gill Sans, and Joanna — shaping Penguin Books, British Railways, and the BBC's visual identity. A figure of profound technical genius and profound moral contradiction, his legacy remains irreducibly complex.
