In Death and Life, Klimt arranges bodies like a garland twisting within cobalt darkness. Limbs interlace under a quilt of floral emblems, hearts and spirals borrowed from Secessionist mosaics. The cloaked skull tilts toward them, wrapped in violet crosses edged with slate blue.

His brush drags thin veils of oil across linen, letting underpainting glint through translucent glazes. Pearly pinks and ochre veins pulse beside icy gray outlines, binding sensuality to mortality. Figures drift as if caught mid-dream, their contours dissolving into ornament.

No scream, no struggle—only the still rhythm of breathing color and sleeping desire. In Death and Life, pattern replaces fear, granting the cycle of existence its strange, ornamental peace.

Origin Story

Francisco Goya (30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, often called the father of modern art.

Known for his striking portraits and dark, haunting themes, Goya documented Spain’s turbulent history, including the brutality of war and social unrest.

His famous works like "The Third of May 1808" and "Saturn Devouring His Son" reflect both political commentary and a deep exploration of human nature. Goya’s later works grew increasingly dark, with a focus on the fears and madness of society.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
