About the Artwork
Kamisaka Sekka transformed the Kyoto design scene during the Meiji era through his pioneering Rinpa style woodblock print series. In his masterpiece A Thousand Grasses, the artist captures the elegance of traditional kimono sashes with meticulous woodcut precision.
These textile patterns represent a bridge between ancient Japanese aesthetic values and modern decorative arts. Each obi fabric strip reveals hand-burnished ink textures and flat pigment application typical of the Kyoto school. White plum blossoms rest against indigo backgrounds while geometric abstraction defines the rust-colored segments.
This Chigusa illustration celebrates the wabi-sabi philosophy of beauty found within functional objects. The composition mirrors the rhythmic grace of a silk loom. Every stroke honors the legacy of Japanese craftsmanship and the refined sensibilities of the Taisho era.
