Commissioned for the imperial court in 1563, this portrait stood as a witty allegory of seasonal abundance, fusing still life with portraiture in a manner both satirical and celebratory. The image entwines rustic harvest labor with courtly erudition, reflecting an age intoxicated by natural philosophy, artifice, and riddling invention.
