Walking in Rainy Weather is a storm built indoors, a Meiji-era studio portrait where the gale is pinned in place. Her kimono sleeve flies left on an invisible thread. The conifer on the painted backdrop stays calm, being paint.

Two wooden clogs stand on stilted teeth above studio gravel, and everything above them is an act of balance. Count the seconds with her. The studio lens asked for stillness, so this unnamed model had to freeze a stumble and make it read as weather.

She leans into it anyway. Both hands lock around the bamboo shaft of a wagasa, an oil-paper umbrella fanning soot-brown ribs above her. Tall rain geta lift her over a puddle nobody poured. At the parted hem, an ivory under-robe flashes a spray of blossoms, a private garden caught mid-escape.

Photographs of this kind left treaty-port Japan in lacquered souvenir albums, sold by the page to travelers who wanted the floating world packed away. But the pose predates the camera. Keisai Eisen drew his umbrella-carrying beauty for the woodblock in the 1830s, and here that bijin-ga lineage walks out of ukiyo-e into sepia.

Hang this vintage Japanese photography art print where the air is still and she keeps bracing. Her eyes stay lowered. The gale is hers alone. And whatever the glance knows about selling a storm to strangers, it keeps.

Origin Story

Meiji-era tourist photography was a booming trade in illusion. Between 1868 and 1912 Japan modernised at a sprint, while the commercial studios of Yokohama sold the opposite: a feudal past, posed, lit and packed for the voyage home. Known as Yokohama shashin, these souvenir portraits handed Western travellers the Japan they had come to find. Samurai in full armour. Rickshaw pullers frozen mid-stride on a studio floor. Geisha in kimono beneath paper umbrellas, a folding screen standing in for a whole world.

Kusakabe Kimbei and Raimund von Stillfried made colour their signature. Each hand-coloured albumen print passed under a brush, pigment laid over monochrome until kimono and umbrella glowed. What survives is beautiful and slippery: staged nostalgia, an exoticised keepsake, a romance built for foreign eyes. Half document, half theatre, and fully aware of its audience.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
