About the Artwork
Utagawa Kunisada’s Viewing Plum Blossoms wraps your phone in an Edo afternoon where cold air still bites and the first white ume buds crack open on a soot-brown bough. Three figures gather beneath a Japanese pine. Its needles fan out like green paper parasols. A young dandy grips his collar against the chill, lips parted like a kabuki lead mid-line. Pale aqua lattice checks stack over seigaiha waves in burnished ochre.
Below him a woman bends her lacquered shimada topknot. One long amber kanzashi hairpin slices the black. She steadies a brocade bundle with tassels of persimmon and celadon. A small girl crowned in cornflower blooms peers up, her collar speckled with kanoko shibori dots.
Behind them the river sinks through bokashi gradations of Prussian blue, the imported pigment that made Edo woodblock printers giddy. This ukiyo-e phone case carries that nishiki-e heat. Toyokuni III fed a city hungry for actors and bijin-ga beauties. Here the Utagawa school hands you a late-winter picnic, chilled and fragrant at the edge of spring.
