About the Artist

Jan van Kessel (1626–1679) spun the natural world into gold. A Flemish painter of the Antwerp guild, he captured insects, blossoms, seashells, and mythologies with jewel-like clarity, each canvas a cabinet of curiosities. Grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder, van Kessel inherited a legacy of meticulous observation and infused it with luminous serenity. His still lifes—teeming with butterflies, botanical wonders, and marine life—offered both devotion and display, a Baroque marriage of science and art. Revered across Europe, his works adorned Habsburg palaces and aristocratic collections, preserving a universe in miniature. Today, Jan van Kessel endures as a poet of precision.
