Samuel van Hoogstraten’s Trompe-l'oeil still life offers no entry point, only an exquisite dead end: a quodlibet that pretends to scatter personal relics but in fact assembles a manifesto. This is no drawer left ajar; it’s a stage, a self-portrait without a face.
The imperial medallion dangles with deliberate pride, proof of a painter elevated by deception—one who duped the Holy Roman Emperor with 17th-century painted trickery so deft it shimmered like truth. Here, Baroque illusionism becomes social ascent: from brush-for-hire to bearer of golden chains.
