Kogyo Tsukioka's Tree and Chrysanthemums distills the Meiji era onto mulberry paper in washes of sage mist and indigo current. A gnarled pine branch—its bark rendered in sepia striations—arcs over a stream where chrysanthemum blooms cluster in ivory, saffron yellow, and burnt coral.
The Japanese woodblock print tradition breathes here through bokashi gradation, the sky dissolving from parchment warmth into charcoal void. Broad paulownia leaves float against carved negative space, their sage-olive silhouettes anchoring the floral arrangement below.
Tsukioka trained under ukiyo-e masters before pivoting to Noh theater imagery; this kachō-ga composition echoes that discipline, each petal carved with gouge precision. Autumn streams ripple in parallel indigo lines, edged with foam circles rising toward morning glories barely visible at frame's edge.
