About This Artwork
Indigo water curls beneath paulownia shade in Kogyo Tsukioka's Tree and Chrysanthemums, a kachō-e woodblock from late Meiji Japan pressed now into your palm.
Chrysanthemum heads punctuate the scene—cream-white petals edged in parchment tone, golden orbs thick as temple offerings, terracotta clusters low on a celadon hillside. The pine limb sweeps in burnt umber curvature, its needles absent, bark etched in sumi-ink strokes.
Tsukioka mastered nishiki-e printing before dedicating his studio to Noh imagery, and that theatrical restraint appears in this seasonal composition. Foam bubbles scatter near the dark rock face; morning glory tendrils hint at summer's end. The bokashi fade from cream ground into slate black mimics twilight settling over a Kyoto garden, the stream a ribbon of ultramarine stillness.
