About the Artwork
Between crag and century-old agave, a tiger pauses mid-prowl. Jacques-Laurent Agasse painted exotic fauna with the clinical tenderness of an anatomist, and here his brush carves saffron and rust into striped musculature that seems to twitch beneath linen-weave oil. The rocky outcrop looms in slate and verdigris, lichens clinging like weathered brocade, while fern fronds soften the composition's lower edge.
Light falls through a fissure onto distant terrain, staining the atmosphere with milk and pearl. The Swiss artist's Neoclassical training shows in the measured weight of the cat's stance—four paws planted, spine level—yet his London years introduced wonder at the foreign creatures parading through Exeter 'Change.
