About this Artwork

A hillside gathering stitched from pigment and protocol: Ikeda Koson arranges these court poets not in motion, but in meter—each robed syllable part of an imperial stanza unfolding across silk.

Thirty-six poetic immortals recline in tiers, folded into the pale ochre of earth, their expressions caught between verse and reverence. One clutches his sleeve in thought; another leans into the shoulder of another’s phrase. Garments—seafoam, persimmon, chrysanthemum gold—glisten against the restrained hush of the earth-toned ground.

Beneath pines inked in asymmetrical rhythm, the figures conjure Heian courtly aesthetics and Edo-period painterly control. You are not looking at a scene—you are reading a visual waka. Koson, working in Kyoto in the 19th Century, paints with the syntax of Yamato-e: gold leaf shimmer, flattened perspective, stylized face.

Each poet—whether aristocrat, noblewoman, or attendant—is a stroke in the calligraphy of seasonal grace, literary refinement, and Japanese poetic tradition. This Yamato-e style treasure preserves not an event, but an ethos—an age when poetry was policy and every cloak carried the weight of culture.

Origin Story

Ikeda Koson (池田 孤邨, 1801–1866) was a Japanese painter associated with the Rinpa tradition, celebrated for revitalizing classical themes with distinctive skill and dynamic brushwork. Born in Echigo province, Koson later settled in Edo (now Tokyo), where he became a pupil of the renowned artist Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828).

Drawing deeply from the Rinpa style, Koson specialized in sophisticated compositions inspired by traditional court festivals (gosekku), originally rooted in Chinese customs and long celebrated in Japan.

His mastery lay in his ability to fuse naturalistic elegance with the vibrant decorative approach pioneered by his predecessors. Koson's paintings are noted for their freshness, delicacy, and lively depiction of seasonal motifs, marking a significant chapter in the evolution of the Rinpa artistic lineage.
