Artwork Description
He’s lit like prey, but postured as predator—nude, erect, threaded with the same ochres that rip through the clearing like torn linen. His bow arcs above him, strung taut against the murk of brushstroke-brown. Forearm lifted. Hip cocked left. The right leg sinking slightly into that ghosted green below, not ground but painter’s smear.
Paulsen renders the male body not in anatomical fidelity but as target of his own pigment. The forest folds around the archer like a myth collapsing—branches arcing, leaves liquefied, trunks blurred to oil-rinsed wounds.
No horizon. No witness. Just one body—outlined in friction-light—aiming toward the sky. Paulsen makes the Nordic male hunter, myth, target, tension, and pigment. Trembling beneath 19th-century Danish heat.
