The Nightmare - Johann Heinrich Fussli Framed Canvas

$110USD

Night presses close around the bed. A woman’s slack body gleams against velvet gloom; at her throat perches an incubus, its gaze reptilian, its form both beast and conscience. Beyond the folds of vermilion fabric, a spectral horse rears into view, eyes roiling in silent alarm.

Füssli captures the instant where sleep becomes stagecraft—oil pigments thinned to translucence, shadows layered like unspoken thought. Every contour flickers between anatomy and apparition.

The Romantic sublime convulses here, translating folklore into psychology, and the painter’s obsession with what stirs beneath reason into vision. The Nightmare endures as the century’s most intimate terror: desire caught dreaming of its own undoing.

Artist Biography

Henry Fuseli (born Johann Heinrich Füssli, 1741–1825) was a Swiss-born Romantic painter, draughtsman, and writer who unleashed the unconscious onto canvas long before Freud named it. Best known for The Nightmare (1781), his art fused myth, eroticism, and the supernatural into feverish visions of terror and desire. Trained for the pulpit but driven toward revelation through image, Fuseli’s wild imagination found its home in London, where he became Professor and Keeper at the Royal Academy. His grand, muscular figures and dream-saturated tableaux influenced William Blake and helped define the darker, more psychological frontiers of Romanticism.
