About the Artist

Giuseppe Arcimboldo is the Renaissance court painter who turned fruit, fish, flowers, and fungi into uncanny portraits that still unsettle and delight. Born in Milan in 1526, he worked for the Habsburg emperors in Vienna and Prague, where he painted his famous “composite heads,” human visages conjured entirely from seasonal produce, books, or even firewood. Arcimboldo was a master of illusion, at once a naturalist cataloguing the world’s abundance and a surrealist before the word existed. His strange vision bridged science and fantasy, inspiring later artists from Salvador Dalí to the Surrealists, ensuring his harvest of wonder endures.
