About the Artwork

A cream-colored slash tears open the teal night. E. L. Trouvelot recorded this 1881 apparition from Harvard's observatory, translating telescopic data into chromolithographic splendor. The comet's coma blazes pearl-white against gradations of aquamarine and deep viridian, while its bifurcated tail feathers upward in luminous filaments.

Silhouetted below, the observatory dome anchors human inquiry to cosmic passage. Guy wires cut across the image, a window casts amber warmth, tree shapes fringe the horizon like charred lace. Trouvelot's method—direct observation married to lithographic mastery—produced fifteen astronomical prints now held in institutions worldwide.

Victorian-era astronomical illustration meets Gilded Age scientific publishing in this frame, where perihelion fire and stellar scatter coexist with earthbound architecture. The Great Comet of 1881 Phone Case carries that 19th-century wonder into the present, teal atmosphere and all.

Artist Biography

Étienne Léopold Trouvelot (1827–1895) was a French-born artist and astronomer whose legacy splits cleanly between celestial beauty and ecological catastrophe. After fleeing France for the United States in the 1850s, he settled in Massachusetts, where an ill-fated experiment with imported spongy moths unleashed one of North America’s most destructive invasive species. Trouvelot ultimately abandoned entomology and turned skyward, producing over 7,000 meticulous astronomical drawings. His chromolithographs of the Sun, Moon, planets, auroras, and nebulae, published in 1881, rank among the most exquisite scientific images of the nineteenth century. Craters on the Moon and Mars bear his name, a cosmic afterlife far cleaner than his earthly mistake.
