About the Artist

Konstantin Somov (1869–1939) was a Russian painter of exquisite precision and theatrical decadence, best known for his affiliation with the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement but with notable nudes that catch gay men's attention.

Born into an artistic family in Saint Petersburg, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Ilya Repin before refining his technique in Paris at the Académie Colarossi.

His compositions evoke the fading grandeur of the 18th century, infused with an air of nostalgia, elegance, queerness and quiet melancholy.
