About the Artist

Thomas Eakins was a radical realist who peeled back the pious veneer of 19th-century American art to paint truth in the raw. Born in Philadelphia in 1844, he combined anatomical precision, photographic innovation, and unflinching honesty to render life as it moved—sinewed, sweating, and unsentimental. His masterpieces like The Gross Clinic and The Swimming Hole challenged academic convention with their muscular intensity and homoerotic candor. Though scandalized and exiled from institutions for his frank use of nude models, Eakins shaped American realism through his students and fearless pedagogy. Today, he is celebrated not only for his brilliance with the brush, but for laying bare the body and the psyche.
