Artwork Description
Charcoal breathes through cream paper, shaping a bare torso that confronts the gaze with both gravity and quiet resistance. Tanner’s draughtsmanship, circa 1891, anchors the shoulders, the taut chest, the subtle rise of abdomen, a body at once model and monument.
The face, with shadowed jawline and curling mustache, turns slightly upward, refusing anonymity. Every line holds tension between study and portrait, practice and declaration. American art history rarely granted Black subjects such commanding presence, yet here the sitter claims permanence within the academy’s tradition of nude figure drawing.
