About the Artist

Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767–1849) was a Swiss-born virtuoso of animal portraiture, celebrated for his anatomical precision and poetic realism. Trained in Geneva and later Paris, where he studied veterinary science to deepen his understanding of equine musculature, Agasse captured the soul of beasts with an elegance that rivaled human portraiture. His career pivoted when an English aristocrat, Lord Rivers, commissioned a painting of his deceased greyhound—sparking Agasse’s move to London, where he became a beloved chronicler of racehorses, exotic creatures, and rural scenes. Though acclaimed in life, Agasse died in poverty, remembered not for wealth, but for his breathtaking fidelity to nature.
