About the Artist

Alfred Henry Maurer (1868–1932) was an American modernist painter whose work, initially realistic, shifted dramatically into avant-garde styles like Cubism and Fauvism.

Maurer was highly influenced by his time in Paris, where he mingled with influential artists and absorbed new approaches to art. He gained some early recognition, even winning prestigious awards, but his move towards modernist techniques alienated his father and hurt his prospects.

Though respected in avant-garde circles, he struggled for wider success.
