Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (6 May 1880 – 15 June 1938) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, pivotal in shaping 20th-century modern art. He co-founded Die Brücke, a group that defined German Expressionism with its bold colors and emotional depth. Kirchner's work captured nudes, urban life, and group portraits.

His Berlin street scenes from 1911 vividly convey the energy and isolation of city life. World War I deeply affected Kirchner. He volunteered for service but suffered a breakdown, prompting a move to Davos, Switzerland, for recovery. In the 1930s, the Nazi regime labeled his art as "degenerate" and seized many works.

He died in Davos in 1938. Kirchner's influential expressionist style, marked by intense emotion, continues to be celebrated in major museums worldwide.
