About the Artwork
A cavern of ochres and lead-white. The king lies prone, crown discarded, while a witch draped in white and soot lifts her arm toward the apparition swelling above her. West arranges the scene like an experiment in obedience — light measuring guilt, gesture revealing collapse.
Oil paint pools around Saul’s body, brushed thick as remorse. And within the scene's vapor stands Samuel, rendered neither living nor dead, his outline trembling through turpentine glaze.
History crowds the frame: scripture, empire, rationalism, fear. By 1777, West had turned paint into philosophy, binding superstition to Enlightenment order, finding in this forbidden encounter the true theatre of kingship undone.
