About the Artwork

Rupert Bunny, the Melbourne-born painter named in this vintage bohemian photograph, shares the sun with three friends. Two paper parasols tilt over the men on sun-bleached stones, and every one of them looks straight at the lens as if the camera were a fifth friend.

Mustaches, bare feet, a navy-trimmed swimsuit and a pair of white trunks give the group its easy rhythm. The parasols, ribbed paper in the Japanese fashion that Paris painters adored, throw a hard diagonal shadow across one chest. Bunny, son of a county judge and fluent in three languages from boyhood, trained in Paris studios, and his own sunlit bathers still lay ahead. A camera of the 1890s caught the friends at ease in this antique gay photo, knees angled together and their shoulders touching.

Sepia warms the rocks to biscuit and toast while the shadows go espresso. The group stays unguarded and tender. Collectors may file the sheet under vintage photos of queer bohemians, but Rupert Bunny and Friends awaits your living room or dining room as a summer group portrait, where four sun-warmed men keep a summer afternoon open for every visitor.

Origin Story

Rupert Bunny (1864–1947) was an Australian painter who carried Melbourne into the salons of fin-de-siècle Paris. Born in St Kilda, he trained at the National Gallery School, then under Phillip Calderon in London and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. Tritons earned an honourable mention at the 1890 Paris Salon, and the French state acquired thirteen of his works for the Musée du Luxembourg and regional collections.

His palette travelled from symbolist myth to Pre-Raphaelite reverie centred on his muse Jeanne Morel, then to the heightened colour of Matisse and the Ballets Russes, as in The Rape of Persephone and Fresque. Music hums through Moonlight Sonata and his portraits of Nellie Melba and Percy Grainger. After almost fifty years abroad, he settled in Melbourne in 1933 and became Vice-President of the Contemporary Art Society, leaving a sumptuous, cosmopolitan body of work.
