About this Artwork
George Bellows tips a tenement bedroom onto its side and lets the lithographic crayon do the rest. A woman heaves one leg skyward from the floorboards, head buried in folded forearms, her chalk-pale flesh smudged against lampblack shadow.
Behind her on the iron bedstead, a moustachioed husband props himself among pillows, cigarette smoldering, watching without comment. The checkerboard quilt cuts a diagonal between them — labor and leisure stitched into one patterned seam. A coal scuttle squats by the wash basin.
Bellows, an Ashcan School realist and pupil of Robert Henri, drew Manhattan's tenement intimacy with unflinching crayon-on-stone candor. This 1916 lithograph carries early-twentieth-century New York's class friction, marital fatigue, and the gendered weight of bodily reform straight into the room.
