About the Artist

Kōno Bairei, born in 1844 in Kyoto, was a Meiji-era artist who transformed traditional Japanese painting with his masterful depictions of birds and flowers. Blending Maruyama-Shijo traditions with elements of Western realism, Bairei's work brought fresh vitality to classic themes.

Bairei's renowned "Album of One Hundred Birds" was a celebrated masterpiece that drew admiration from both ornithologists and art enthusiasts. As a teacher, Bairei mentored future legends like Takeuchi Seihō, nurturing Kyoto's art scene.
