Katsushika Hokusai built this Hyakunin Isshu ukiyo-e woodblock print around a single pun. Chunagon Yakamochi's court poem speaks of frost settling on a bridge built by magpies. The nurse's folk reading seized on one word: watari, meaning crossing, and turned heaven's bridge into a harbor scene.
A black-hulled cargo boat, bow curled high and trimmed in salmon lacquer, cuts across flat water under two bare masts strung with rigging. Sailors in dark robes work the deck; one steadies the tiller near a blue cabin with a shuttered window, pink beneath its eaves.
Rust-red cliffs climb from the shoreline on the left, their slopes dark with pine, small thatched roofs pressed into the rock. A coral band lights the horizon where Hokusai layers his signature bokashi gradient into pale sky, and two smaller sailboats drift near a low gray island.
Birds cross low over indigo water. Above, a poem card holds the original waka in brushed calligraphy beside a blue title cartouche, court verse and common trade sharing one Edo-period sheet.
