About the Artist

Gaspar de Crayer (1584–1669) was a Flemish master whose altarpieces and portraits breathed life into the spiritual drama of the Counter-Reformation. Rooted in Brussels yet fluent in Antwerp's artistic networks, he fused the Mannerist elegance of Maerten de Vos with the heroic grandeur of Rubens and the emotive sensitivity of van Dyck. As court painter to Spanish governors and a prolific creator of religious commissions across Flanders, Spain, and Germany, de Crayer shaped the visual rhetoric of Catholic devotion. His workshop was vast, his compositions monumental, his influence enduring—elevating Flemish Baroque painting to both courtly and sacred splendor.
