Katsushika Hokusai cut this ukiyo-e woodblock print in oban format as a curtain of parallel Prussian-blue threads. Each line falling the full height of the sheet without a single break, and named it Ono Waterfall on the Kisokaido Road for his print series touring the falls of Japan's provinces.

Three travelers cross a narrow wooden footbridge below, their round packs pale against a moss-green hillside, walking the old mountain trade route that once carried merchants and packhorses between Edo and Kyoto through steep passes.

Prussian blue, newly imported into nineteenth-century Japan and printed here in graduated washes known as bokashi, colors every strand of falling water against a slate-gray stone face. Ochre cliffs and moss-toned pine needles frame the drop.

A vermilion-roofed pavilion balances on the ledge above, watching travelers pass beneath its spray. Rust-colored eroded rock breaks the pine-green canopy at center, echoing the vermilion seals stamped beside Hokusai's brushed signature in the cartouche. Water keeps falling in the same six lines, patient as the road below it.

Origin Story

Katsushika Hokusai, born in 1760, was a master of ukiyo-e whose influence shaped Japanese art and captivated audiences worldwide.

Renowned for his dynamic compositions and vivid details, Hokusai's work transcended traditional ukiyo-e, imbuing nature and daily life with a powerful narrative quality. His iconic series, "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," portrayed the sacred mountain as both a majestic natural feature and a symbol deeply embedded in Japanese culture.

Hokusai's innovative approach blended the sublime with the everyday, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and leaving a profound legacy that continues to resonate within the world of art today.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
