About the Artwork
Paul Klee's Old City phone case holds a 1924 watercolor meditation on Tunisian memory and Bauhaus discipline. Horizontal bands of pigment—cobalt dissolving into saffron, rose pooling into violet—translate North African architecture into pictographic shorthand. Each triangular rooftop, each arched window, flickers with the artist's Kairouan journey, where light struck mud-brick walls and shadows carved themselves into doorways.
The central lattice, inked in Prussian hue, tightens like alleyways glimpsed from a minaret. Klee's oil-transfer technique scratches line through translucent wash, leaving ghost-streets in the grain. Beneath rose-madder strata, a violet diamond network suggests foundations older than any map could record.
The German-Swiss master compresses an entire medina into rhythmic notation—urban fabric made visible as scored color, held now in your hand.
