About the Artist

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was the Parisian painter-patron who anchored Impressionism in realism, conjuring rain-slicked boulevards and quiet interiors with cinematic precision. Born into affluence, he painted like an engineer of intimacy—capturing men bathing, boating, and brooding with a gaze too modern for his era. His Paris Street; Rainy Day is now iconic, but Caillebotte’s bold perspectives and queer-coded compositions were long overshadowed by his philanthropy. He funded Monet’s rent, preserved Manet’s legacy, and posthumously gifted France its foundational Impressionist collection. A yachtsman, gardener, and stamp collector, his artistry resurfaced a century later—revealed as both voyeur and visionary.
