About the Artwork
The road at Nikkō stretches into quiet infinity, bordered by cedar giants whose bark darkens into shadowed columns. At the base, a small traveler bends beneath the weight of a woven pack—human fragility held against arboreal grandeur.
Kawase Hasui’s woodblock print transforms everyday passage into poetry: shin-hanga technique suffused with Meiji longing, Edo ritual, and Taishō lyricism. The scene bears ukiyo-e resonance yet speaks in modern hues, where Western naturalism and Japanese print tradition entwine.
