About this Artwork
In Study for a Crucifixion, Mariano Fortuny Marsal pressed a living model into cruciform position against a dark studio support, his 1863 oil study extracting raw anatomical truth before any gold-haloed altarpiece could claim it. The bisque-toned flesh catches light at the sternum and spreads outward into umber wash at the flanks, each brushstroke mapping the clavicle's tension and the locked wrist's submission.
A white cloth band circles the skull — not crown, not bandage, but the working prop of a Reus-born academician who trained in Rome and carried Spanish realism into every fiber of this preparatory drawing. The crossed shins torque the lower body into a spiral the eye must solve. Foreshortening drives the barrel chest toward the viewer while the arms recede into graphite-edged shadow, the whole figure a masterclass in nineteenth-century life drawing.
Fortuny had absorbed Goya's tonal severity and the Roman nude tradition both; here the two pressures meet in a figure simultaneously ordinary man and sacrificial subject, body-as-argument for how radically honest academic painting could become.
