Description

Get lost in the enchanting world of George Barbier's "Minuit" with this captivating Art Deco fashion pillow. You'll be transported to a chic Parisian apartment, where a stylish woman sits atop a striped pillow, her ruffled white dress a stark contrast to the room's bold patterns. Barbier's masterful pochoir technique brings to life the delicate butterfly, the ornate mirror frame, and the whimsical Pekingese dog at her feet.

As your eyes dance across the pillow's surface, you'll uncover hidden details that speak volumes about 1920s French fashion and society. The woman's bob haircut and rouge-touched cheeks epitomize the liberated flapper aesthetic, while the curving lines and nature-inspired motifs nod to Art Nouveau's lingering influence on Barbier's Art Deco style.

This pillow isn't just decor; it's a conversation piece that celebrates the LGBTQ artist's pivotal role in shaping modern visual culture. From costume design for silent film star Rudolph Valentino to illustrations in Gazette du Bon Ton, Barbier's legacy as a French illustrator and tastemaker comes alive in your home.

About the Artist

George Barbier (1882–1932) was one of the leading French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes, he quickly rose to prominence after his first exhibition in 1911, receiving commissions for theater and ballet costume design, book illustration, and haute couture fashion work. Known as part of "The Knights of the Bracelet," a group lauded for their elegance, Barbier's contemporaries included his cousins Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Pierre Brissaud. Throughout his career, he also explored jewelry, glass, and wallpaper design, while contributing writings to the Gazette du Bon Ton. Barbier worked on costume design for the Folies Bergère and gained wider recognition with his work in L'Illustration magazine. He passed away in 1932, leaving behind a legacy of sophistication and innovation in art and fashion design.
