About the Artwork
Midnight cracks open above a Gothic spire and out swoops Mephistopheles in the Air, grinning like he owns every shadow. Eugène Delacroix pulled this lithograph in 1828 for Albert Stapfer’s French edition of Goethe’s Faust, and you can still feel the crayon dragging across stone. Grain hisses. Shadows bristle.
His bat-ribbed wings span the night in charcoal black and smoke gray. A horned cap tilts back. One clawed hand lifts toward a flare of bone-white light, as if he’s tasting the gossip of the town below. Church towers poke up through a sepia ground where a low moon rots softly on the horizon.
Charles Motte printed the plates for a Paris hungry for French Romanticism, that era of storm-tossed poets and unruly ink. Critics sneered at the scratchy wildness. Goethe praised the series anyway.
Now this devil in flight rides your phone case, a pocket-sized piece of Romantic printmaking cut from German legend. Every call lands with a smirk. Somewhere beneath those wings, a medieval town sleeps on, unaware it’s being watched.
