Memento Mori arrives as a skull carved out of jet black, a 1916 woodcut by Julie de Graag that stares through the ink without blinking. Look at the black and you can see wood grain streaking through it, faint rain inside the ink. Every tooth stands cut. The Dutch printmaker let her gouge chase white lines across temple and cheekbone, so bone seems to surface from soot one stripe at a time.

Behind the cranium an arch of bone white rises like a cemetery gate, then drops into a black band where the jaw rests its weight. That lower slab reads as earth. De Graag cut this relief print during a war her neutral Netherlands watched from the edge. Serif capitals on the Latin banner below carry a warning any passerby could read.

Nieuwe Kunst gave her the clean contour. From Japanese woodblock prints she learned how bare paper can carry heft. Her monogram A.J.D.G. sits small in the lower corner, an heir to the vanitas still lifes of the Dutch Golden Age. This skull art print keeps its ivory grin lit on your wall, cradled by an arch like a held note.

Origin Story

Julie de Graag (1877–1924) was a Dutch printmaker and watercolourist who found grandeur in a frog in a ditch. Born in Gorinchem, she trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where critic Henk Bremmer steered her toward colour woodcuts. In 1904 she settled in Laren beside sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa and painter Bart van der Leck, paring form to its essentials. A 1908 fire consumed much of her work; she kept carving.

Working the hard end grain of the block, de Graag cut clean, contrasting lines poised between Art Nouveau ornament and De Stijl reduction. Owls, ferns, sunflowers and portraits settle into monumentality in Memento Mori (1916) and Two Owls (1921). Her prints belong to the Rijksmuseum and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and in 2024 Escher in The Palace showed them beside M.C. Escher’s.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
