About the Artwork
Olive Cotton’s lens isolates Max Dupain after surf, his torso illuminated in fractured light while his face recedes into shadow. The photograph reveals sculptural clarity: abdominal ridges, faint chest hair, sinewed arm lines, and the tension of fingers grasping cloth.
Originally printed on silver gelatin, the tonal range slips between velvety black and incandescent highlight, pushing the image toward abstraction. Cotton, a pioneer of Australian modernist photography, reshaped portraiture by interlacing sensuality with stark precision.
