About This Artwork

Joris Hoefnagel's Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta phone case brings a sixteenth-century collaboration to your hand. Vienna's imperial court, around 1561, witnessed an unlikely partnership: Georg Bocskay, a master of Renaissance calligraphy, inscribed flowing italic script across vellum, while the Flemish illuminator Hoefnagel transformed those alphabets into a gallery of natural wonders.

The mussel lies split, its pale exterior giving way to an opalescent interior—anatomical precision rendered in watercolor. Coral-red flowers arch above it; a black beetle sits as tiny punctuation. Hoefnagel's naturalist eye, schooled in the Kunstkammer tradition of rigorous specimen study, treats each creature as a text to be read.

These images are specimens of natural history illustration, not decorative afterthoughts, embedded in the very practice of learning to write. Each calligraphic letterform becomes a frame for seeing. And the phone case carries sixteenth-century conviction intact and still living: nature and script are not rivals but siblings, both demanding the hand of an empirical observer. Every brushstroke and flourish asserting that seeing truly is an art form, one worth preserving.

Origin Story

The Model Book of Calligraphy — Mira calligraphiae monumenta — is a Renaissance manuscript born from rivalry across generations. In 1561–62, Georg Bocskay, Croatian-born secretary to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, filled its pages in Vienna with dazzling scripts, a virtuoso survey of every hand a scribe could master. Thirty years later, Emperor Rudolf II commissioned Flemish illuminator Joris Hoefnagel to answer word with image, framing Bocskay's calligraphy in flowers, fruit, insects, and grotesques rendered with startling naturalism.

Word and brush contend across every folio, each artist claiming supremacy for his craft. Hoefnagel's meticulous specimens, painted for Rudolf's celebrated Kunstkammer, anticipate Netherlandish still life, while Bocskay's alphabets remain a testament to sixteenth-century penmanship's full range. Together they created one of manuscript illumination's most singular collaborations.
